Will the Red Sox Buy or Sell at the Deadline?
Jake and Bob discuss the latest round of injuries, how the trade deadline might unfold, and recap the Sox minor league news from May.
Welcome back to The Red Seat Podcast, episode number 318. On this week’s episode, Jake Devereaux and Bob Osgood review the latest round of injuries and roster maneuvering, discuss the players most likely to be moved at the deadline if the Red Sox are sellers, and complete the minor league round-up for the month of May.
Jake and Bob opened the show by talking about the continued injuries on the Red Sox roster. Wilyer Abreu, Vaughn Grissom, Chris Martin, and Romy Gonzalez have all hit the Injured List in the last few days alone. Meanwhile, Garrett Whitlock underwent an internal brace procedure. Tyler O’Neill’s return and Masa Yoshida’s impending rehab assignment could help the cause a bit, but the lineup is suddenly looking rather minor-leagueish.
The starting pitching has regressed a bit over the last couple of weeks. Kutter Crawford has a 6.43 ERA over his last five starts and has given up some ill-timed taters, Cooper Criswell’s ERA is 5.27 over his last six starts, and Brayan Bello clocks in at 5.67 over his past five. Who are we most worried about and how much of this is surprising? Nick Pivetta moved off the worry list with an elite performance against Atlanta on Wednesday.
While we are hopeful that things improve over the next two months, this looks like a .500 team that could need to sell at the deadline. If so, who is most likely to be traded and which player could fetch the greatest return? Kenley Jansen, Chris Martin, Nick Pivetta, Tyler O’Neill, and Rob Refsnyder all came up as possibilities.
Finally, we closed the show discussing a plethora of minor league updates, including (but not limited to) Luis Perales’ move to Double-A and first appearance in Baseball America’s Top-100, Yordanny Monegro’s return from injury, Kristian Campbell’s promotion to Double-A, Matthew Lugo and Nick Yorke moving up to Worcester, Marcelo Mayer’s improvements from last year, and strong recent appearances from Zack Penrod and Richard Fitts.
