Bournemouth’s spiky response after talks with referee at Newcastle as VAR explanation emerges

Andoni Iraola has claimed his Bournemouth side ‘deserve more respect’ after Newcastle United were awarded a penalty in a 2-2 draw against the Cherries.
Bournemouth were 1-0 up at St James’ Park when Adam Smith pulled Fabian Schar’s shirt inside the box before the hour mark. Referee Michael Salisbury initially played on, but VAR intervened and Rob Jones sent the official to the pitchside monitor.
The VAR advised that Schar was in an offside position, but stressed the defender was not committing an offside offence because Smith pulled him back before he was able to attempt to play the ball. Salisbury duly awarded a penalty, which was converted by Anthony Gordon.
