Ipswich Town now want 26-year-old attacker that Leeds United held talks to sign yesterday

Leeds United’s interest in Burnley’s Manuel Benson came as a surprise last week and new reports say the Whites even held talks for him on Wednesday – but, we may face competition from Ipswich.

Benson starred at Burnley last term as Vincent Kompany’s side went up from the Championship to the Premier League, winning the division. He had a hand in 18 goals in 37 games for the Lancashire outfit.

This season, just five outings. He needs a move and the race to land the Belgian is hotting up. It comes after reports last week said Leeds were ‘pushing’ for Benson as a possible replacement for Willy Gnonto.

Then, it was reported on Thursday that Leeds held a further round of talks to sign Benson yesterday. A surprise, given that Leeds were only initially interested if they lost Gnonto – who is close to a new deal.

Now, Give Me Sport report that Leeds are not the only Championship side interested. Southampton have been linked too, but GMS say that Ipswich Town and Birmingham City also want the Belgian ace.

Benson then, has the pick of the Championship’s top clubs fighting for promotion. But it seems unlikely that Leeds will be making a move for the Belgian if Gnonto remains – which is looking increasingly likely.

Even if Benson joined, you would question whether he would start. Jaidon Anthony is struggling to do so at this point, with Cree Summerville and Dan James starring. Gnonto is also excellent cover for the duo.

A move for Benson seems unlikely – perhaps handing Ipswich, Southampton or even Birmingham more of a chance of landing the Burnley man. He returned to the bench for Burnley in their last league game.
