Ipswich Town will be playing with “bravery, confidence and great intensity” when they travel to Coventry City in search a huge three points towards securing automatic promotion to the Premier League, insists manager Kieran McKenna.

The Tractor Boys take on the Sky Blues at the CBS Arena on Tuesday night in a game in hand before concluding a remarkable league campaign on Saturday at home to virtually doomed Huddersfield, while Leeds – whose goal difference is seven better than Ipswich – finish against fourth-placed Southampton at Elland Road.

Mark Robins’ men have fallen short of the play-offs themselves amid a gruelling fixture schedule which has seen them rack up several injuries and a fresh suspension ahead of their final two games.

“We knew coming into the Hull game (a 3-3 draw on Saturday) we needed five points, and the objective is to try and get a result on Tuesday night,” said the Ipswich boss, whose third placed side are winless in their last four games.

“Hopefully a win, but to get a positive result to keep things under our control going into the last game. We know whatever happens now we’re going back to Portman Road on Saturday in contention for automatic promotion to the Premier League. What a wonderful thing to be involved in, we’ll embrace that and try to deliver a performance on Tuesday.”

Town’s bid for a second successive promotion has stuttered in recent weeks, with three successive draws and a defeat at Norwich in their last four. Leeds have also limped towards the finishing line in picking up only four points from five games.
