Hull City and West Brom eye attacker swoop, contract up next month

Sheffield Wednesday attacker Josh Windass has emerged on the radar of Hull City and West Brom, as detailed in a report by The Star.

Sheffield Wednesday face a battle to keep hold of the forward this summer amid interest from elsewhere in the Football League. His contract at Hillsborough expires at the end of next month and he is due to become a free agent as things stand.

Windass, 30, is in ongoing talks with the Owls over future following the end of the 2023/24 season as they managed to stay up in the Championship under Danny Rohl. He has been with the South Yorkshire outfit since 2020 and has a big decision to make on his situation.

In this latest update regarding his future by The Star, fellow second tier clubs such as Hull City, West Brom and Stoke City are considering a swoop for him ahead of the next campaign. Derby County have also been credited with an interest following their promotion from League One.

Hull City have been linked with Windass before in the past due to his dad’s links to the club. His father, Dean, scored the winner in the 2008 play-off final against Bristol City at Wembley to earn the Tigers’ first ever promotion to the Premier League.

The East Yorkshire outfit are without a manager at the moment following their surprise decision to cut ties with Liam Rosenior earlier this week. They finished 7th in this past term and were three points off the play-offs in the end.

As for West Brom, they are in play-off semi-final action against Southampton as they look to reach the final and have their first leg against Southampton coming up on Sunday afternoon at the Hawthorns.

The Tigers and the Baggies could see Windass someone to bolster their respective attacking departments for the future. However, their transfer plans will both be up in the air right now.

Sheffield Wednesday signed him on an initial loan deal before making his switch permanent shortly after.

He scored the winner for them in the League One play-off final last year against Barnsley.

The Hull-born man has made 126 appearances for the Owls in all competitions to date and has scored 37 goals, seven of which came this past season.

Prior to his switch to his current team, he had spells at Accrington Stanley, Rangers and Wigan Athletic.

What next for Sheffield Wednesday?

Sheffield Wednesday will be praying that Rohl stays put this summer and also that they can retain the services of Windass.

He has a lot of interest and needs to weigh up what to do next. The Owls finished 20th in the end, three points above the drop zone after winning 2-0 away at Sunderland on the final day.
