Sheffield Wednesday's promotion joy has fallen flat

Opinion: Sheffield Wednesday should consider bargain reunion with 230 club appearance star

Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship survival means that they can start shaping up their squad for the second tier once again, and former owl Adam Reach would be an excellent pick-up.

Sheffield Wednesday ensured their safety on the final day of the season by recording a 2-0 win away from home over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Having spent the majority of the season in the relegation zone, the Owls ended up finishing 20th in the table and another Championship campaign now awaits.

As with every side, there is bound to be a reshuffle in terms of personnel ahead of the new season. Players come and go, though in Wednesday’s case they may benefit from one player in particular making a return.

That player is Adam Reach, who could be available for nothing this summer.

A smart signing

Reach left the Owls after a five-year spell in 2021 to join West Brom, though having made just 17 appearances this campaign his contract with the Baggies is set to expire this summer. The 31-year-old is about to become a free agent and Danny Rohl could do much worse than bringing him back to Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday should consider shrewd Adam Reach reunion

It is safe to say that Reach enjoyed the best form of his career with Wednesday. Over 230 appearances, the former Middlesbrough man scored 24 goals and registered 34 assists.

In contrast, he has hit the back of the net just twice and chipped in with four assists over 76 appearances for West Brom.

Should Marvin Johnson depart when his deal comes to an end, the Owls will be left with just one option on the left side of midfield through Djeidi Gassama.

Sheffield Wednesday should consider shrewd Adam Reach reunion

The France U20 international has shown promise since joining from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, featuring 37 times in all competitions and registering four goals alongside three assists. However, depth is certainly needed and Reach would provide the necessary quality to challenge Gassama for a place.
