Ex-Dodgers champion pitcher signs with new team in California
The tour of California continues for one veteran pitcher.
Robert Murray of FanSided reported Saturday that left-hander Alex Wood has agreed to a deal with the Oakland Athletics. The free-agent deal for Wood is pending a physical.
Wood, 33, was once a standout pitcher with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was an All-Star and finished ninth in NL Cy Young voting in 2017 on the strength of a 16-3 campaign with a 2.72 ERA.
Wood then won a World Series ring with the Dodgers during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
The good news for Wood is that he won’t have to travel very far since he spent the last three seasons right across town from Oakland with the San Francisco Giants.
Wood was 5-5 with a 4.33 ERA in 29 appearances last year, which is probably about what the A’s, who recently had a veteran pitcher retire, can expect out of him in 2024.
