How Orioles’ Trade For Corbin Burnes Impacts Chicago White Sox, Ace Dylan Cease
The Baltimore Orioles swung a blockbuster trade for Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Corbin Burnes on Thursday night, and the the deal could wind up sending shockwaves across the league.
And considering the Chicago White Sox have an ace of their own who’s been caught up in trade rumors all offseason, they could be one of the teams that faces the most direct impact.
28-year-old right-hander Dylan Cease has been caught up in trade talks dating all the way back to last summer’s deadline. The Seattle Mariners are reportedly interested in him, while Atlanta Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos admitted publicly that he has tried to acquire Cease.
But as insider Jon Morosi said on MLB Network on Thursday night, that doesn’t mean a deal is expected to come together overnight.
“I believe he is gonna be a trade more at the trade deadline,” Morosi said. “I think that this, though, establishes the floor for Cease because Cease (has) two years (of team control) as opposed to one year for Corbin Burnes.”
The Orioles were able to get Burnes for pitcher DL Hall, infielder Joey Ortiz and a compensatory first round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. As Morosi said, that sets somewhat of a baseline for the White Sox to build off of, if or when they decide to pull the trigger on a Cease trade.
