Milwaukee Brewers Fans Take Picture of Craig Counsell Managing the Cubs and Turn It into Viral Meme on Social Media

Has there ever been a figure go from hero to zero as quickly as former Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell? Sure, he had his detractors while managing the Brewers, but he always had the “we’re all in this together” thing going for him. While he has gone of his way recently to point out he was not born in Milwaukee, he cannot deny the fact that Wisconsin is where he grew up.

After all, throughout his entire tenure in Milwaukee, Counsell and the Brewers banked on his promotions as the hometown son come back to bring his childhood favorite team to the Promised Land. And for the most part, fans bought into it. Even though they might not have agreed with every decision he made, they felt a certain connection to him because of shared roots.

And then Counsell did the unforgiveable: he accepted an offer to go and manage the Chicago Cubs, one of the Brewers’ most hated rivals. Not only that, he did not give Brewers owner Mark Attanasio the chance to submit a counter-offer. He was done with Milwaukee.

To say that Brewers fans were upset that Counsell spurned their city, his city, would be an understatement. Someone vandalized the sign of a ballpark that bears his name in Whitefish Bay where Little League games are played. Reports of Counsell attending a Milwaukee Bucks game a few days later was met with derision.

To add insult to injury, at least in the minds of Brewers fans, Counsell is still living in Milwaukee and commuting to Chicago every day for work. In their minds, Counsell viewed the city good enough for him to live in, but not good enough to represent as manager of their Major League Baseball team.

Of course, the man is free to live and work wherever he chooses, but the way things went down between the Brewers and their former manager left a bad taste in the mouths of fans.
