Is Dolphins' Mike McDaniel a good coach? We'll know soon

What changes have the Miami Dolphins made to the coaching staff this offseason?

After a disappointing second half of the season, changes were inevitable for the Miami Dolphins this offseason. Shortly after a Wild Card exit against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Dolphins announced they would be parting ways with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

Linebackers coach and fan-favorite on ‘Hard Knocks,’ Anthony Campanile, is departing Miami to take on the same role with the Green Bay Packers. Former Dolphins’ assistant defensive line coach Kenny Baker is heading to the college football world, where he’ll join the University of Texas Longhorns as the defensive line coach.

The Dolphins didn’t just clear house defensively. Offensive assistants Ricardo Allen, Mike Judge, and Kolby Smith will not return in 2024, along with assistant special teams coach Brendan Farrell.

Who have the Dolphins hired as replacements?

The search for Fangio’s successor didn’t take long. Within two weeks, Anthony Weaver was named as the Dolphins’ new defensive coordinator. Weaver comes off a three-year stint with the Baltimore Ravens as defensive line coach, being promoted to assistant head coach as well in 2022.

It didn’t take long for Fangio to find his new gig, as the Philadelphia Eagles quickly hired the coach for their vacant defensive coordinator position. Fangio is bringing along Joe Kasper, who will again serve as a safeties coach. Sam Madison and Renaldo Hill, who worked together as pass game specialists and secondary defense coaches are rumored to possibly follow Fangio as well.

Weaver spent five seasons with the Houston Texans, with his final year in 2020 as defensive coordinator. The defensive-minded coach has also spent time with the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, and New York Jets.

In addition to Weaver, the Dolphins have hired former University of Hawai’i at Manoa offensive coordinator, Roman Sapolu. Sapolu is rumored to take on the vacant offensive line coach position. Brian Duker is taking over as a pass game coordinator and secondary coach after three years managing the Detroit Lions’ defensive backs. The final hire made public is outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow, who previously worked in the same role with the Tennessee Titans.
