Lucas Giolito injury could have big impact for Red Sox, free agency

Red Sox’s Chance Of Signing Frontline Starter Seen As ‘Less Likely’ After Lucas Giolito Injury

Boston is in a very tough spot

The Boston Red Sox got some crushing news Tuesday.

Boston’s most notable addition of the offseason certainly was one-time All-Star pitcher Lucas Giolito. The Red Sox traded Chris Sale away and Giolito essentially was acquired to take his place.

Giolito has been one of the most durable starters in the American League over the last few seasons but now may end up missing the entire 2024 season due to an elbow injury.

Many wondered before the injury whether or not the Red Sox would add more to the rotation and sign Jordan Montgomery. Speculation has only picked up since Giolito’s injury was announced, but a move is seen as “even less likely,” according to MassLive.com’s Christopher Smith.

“Now the Red Sox are without Sale and Giolito,” Smith said. “So does that make them more or less likely to sign free agent Jordan Montgomery who they met with via Zoom right before spring training began?

“Signing Montgomery seemed unlikely anyway because of the budget constraints Breslow is facing. It now seems even less likely. Ownership set a (lower) budget because they don’t believe this team is good enough to compete right now. They have made it clear they are in rebuild mode, not win-now mode, entering 2024.”

Landing Montgomery would be a massive pickup for the Red Sox but it seems like it’s not going to happen right now. Boston continues to be mentioned as an option and losing Giolito makes a move make even more sense, but the club doesn’t seem to want to pay the necessary price.
