Roma owner Friedkin interested in Everton takeover after sealing a deal with the Roman Emperor

Roma owner Dan Friedkin has emerged as one of a number of parties interested in a takeover of Premier League club Everton.

American businessman Friedkin, who has a reported net worth of £4.8bn, is aiming for an exclusivity agreement to purchase current owner Farhad Moshiri’s 94% stake in the club.

BBC Sport understands MSP Sports Capital and local businessmen Andy Bell and George Downing, who have lent the Toffees £158m, are also aiming for a takeover.

Michael Dell, chief executive of Dell Technologies, and Kenneth King of investment firm A Cap are also in the mix.

Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor expressed an interest in buying Everton last month and is looking to sell his 45% stake in the Eagles.

Moshiri had agreed to sell the Blues to Miami-based investment firm 777 Partners in September but after a prolonged process, the sales and purchase agreement ended on 31 May.

England manager Gareth Southgate believes it was “a bit early” to call up Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite for Euro 2024.

Branthwaite had been a mainstay in Sean Dyche’s defence throughout the 2023-24 Premier League campaign, featuring in 35 games and helping them stay up despite an eight-point deduction.

The 21-year-old received his first senior call-up in March and made his senior debut in Monday’s friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Southgate said: “I think it is a bit early for Jarrad. He has had a fabulous season and it was good to get him on the other night.

“Of course, in an ideal world, you would like lots of left-footers. But, to put him ahead of the others, I don’t think that would have been the right call at this stage.

“That is why we have taken what I think is a risk at left-back with Luke [Shaw], but I think that is a risk worth taking.”

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite has been left out of England’s 26-man squad for Euro 2024.

The 21-year-old centre-back had been included in Gareth Southgate’s preliminary 33-man squad, but will not be in the final 26 travelling to Germany for the tournament starting on 14 June.

Branthwaite had an impressive breakthrough season with the Toffees, becoming a mainstay in their backline and featuring in 35 of their 38 Premier League games.

His form earned him his first senior call-up in March and he made his international debut coming off the bench during the Three Lions’ 3-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina on Monday.

The left-footed centre-back was part of the England Under-21 squad that won the European Championship last summer.

Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Luke Shaw, John Stones, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker will be Southgate’s defensive options at Euro 2024.
