Chicago Cubs reliever, Adbert Alzolay, who is on the 60-day injured list, will undergo Tommy John surgery. Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune shared the news following the announcement. Alzolay will miss the remainder of this season and could potentially miss all of 2025. Alzolay went on the 15-day IL due to the flexor strain on May 13 before he was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 2. He made a pair of rehab assignments in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League before a one-inning appearance with Triple-A Iowa on July 27. He suffered a setback in that one-inning outing, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks.

The Cubs were counting on Alzolay to anchor the bullpen again this season. Alzolay, 29, made six appearances in 2022 following a right lat muscle injury in spring training. He came back to put up a strong 2023 season, emerging as the Cubs’ closer. Alzolay posted a 2.67 ERA and 22 saves in 58 appearances. He struck out 26.5 percent of batters against his 5.1 percent walk rate. Alzolay got off to a rough start this season before landing on the IL. He went 1-4 with a 4.67 ERA with four saves in 18 appearances. He allowed six home runs in 17 1/3 innings after allowing five in 64 innings the previous season. Alzolay is making $2.1 million this season in his first year of arbitration. He will be in a similar salary range next season, assuming the Cubs tender him a contract. He is eligible for free agency after the 2026 season.

Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Brusdar Graterol was removed from Tuesday night’s game and the club announced it was a hamstring strain. Manager Dave Roberts told reporters after the game that the strain was the Grade 3 level, the most severe type. Roberts did mention that Graterol is officially done for the season. This comes a day after returning from the 60-day injured list. Graterol missed the first half of the season with right shoulder inflammation. Brusdar Graterol had to be helped off the field in tonight’s game 8 pitches into his season debut with an apparent right leg injury pic.
