‘Really Cool!’ Commanders’ Dan Quinn Ready To Get Season Started

After Dan Quinn was unceremoniously fired by the Atlanta Falcons following the 2020 season, he didn’t know if he’d ever get another head coaching gig again. He signed with the Dallas Cowboys to be their defensive coordinator and immediately turned around one of the league’s worst units. His success in Dallas led to him being hired as the new coach of the Washington Commanders this offseason. New owner Josh Harris and new general manager Adam Peters knew he was the right guy for the job.

Dan Quinn Claims Washington Commanders Are Ahead of Schedule in Rebuild

Fast forward six months, and Quinn is about to kickoff his first season of the Commanders when they visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. “There’s only 32 head coaches, man, and it’s really cool,” Quinn said. “And so, the time in Dallas was really good for me in terms of recapturing the things I wanted to do, did some different things. “So having those experiences, you just kept things in your pocket to say if that moment happens, if it does. And so when it did, this was one that just was no brainer. And so yeah, man, I’m really pumped and, yeah, not taking it for granted at all.”

Related: Commanders, Bucs Went Separate Ways After 2021 Wild Card Classic Quinn was tasked with changing the “losing and toxic” culture left behind by his predecessor Ron Rivera and rebuild a defense that was last in the league a year ago. Through free agency and the draft, the Commanders are in a lot better position compared to last season. The new look Commanders will do battle with the Bucs on Sunday afternoon in Tampa, Florida.

In just two days the Washington Commanders will take to the field against Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This will be our first chance to see where they are up to, just six months into the most comprehensive rebuild I have witnessed in over 50 years of being a fan.

While others may be nervous about some of the weaknesses that couldn’t be addressed in the first offseason, I am genuinely excited to see the new players and coaches in action, as well as some holdovers from the previous regime whose fortunes might improve under Dan Quinn’s leadership.

Of course, I will be happy to see what returning players like Terry McLaurin, Jon Allen and Sam Cosmi can do with better coaching and supporting casts. But this article will focus on new additions and some players who have languished during Ron Rivera’s tenure who have got new opportunities to turn things around.
