Worth more than Neto & Kilman: Wolves hit gold on “one of the best players”

Wolverhampton Wanderers have had a tough start to their Premier League campaign but have showcased enough under Gary O’Neil to suggest that the year ahead will be a successful one.

Last season’s 14th place finish is illustrative of such, with the Old Gold written off by many and predicted to finish on the wrong side of the dreaded dotted line after sales to key players including midfielders Matheus Nunes and Ruben Neves, defenders Nathan Collins and Conor Coady and main goal source Raul Jimenez.

Wolves news: Stefan Borson drops points deduction verdict after £20m reveal

Wolves have to be “very careful” with their transfer spending as they could be close to the profit and sustainability (PSR) limit again this season.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the West Midlands club were close to breaching the rules in the 2023-24 campaign.

Wolves have sold former captain Max Kilman to West Ham for £40million this summer, while star player Pedro Neto has joined Chelsea in a £54million deal.

But that hasn’t helped Gary O’Neil’s side drastically improve their spending power after The Telegraph reported on 19 August they only have a £20million transfer budget remaining ahead of the 30 August deadline.

Wolves could suffer £8million annual hit after transfer reveal

Borson revealed Wolves could take an £8million-a-year hit if they spend that money over the next few days.

“They probably just about got through 2023-24 PSR,” Borson told Football Insider.

But if they only just got through, that tells you they have to be very cautious this season. Clearly, they have made a very big profit on Kilman to West Ham.

“That was a deal where I think their in-price was very low, aside from the sell-on fee, so they will have made good money there.

“But I think it’s just an indication that they are clearly another club running on an operating loss, got quite a big wage bill for a club of their size and have no European football.

“They have got to be very cautious. If you spend £20million, amortised over five years, that’s a £4million-a-year cost on player amortisation before the agent costs and things like that.

“If you round it up to £5million and then you have the incremental costs of the wages, maybe £2-3million extra, that’s an £8million per annum hit for a £20million purchase.

“It just tells you they are feeling pretty close to the £105million limit and they need to be very careful.”
