Leeds United have ‘made an offer’ to sign Sunderland teenager ahead of summer window
Leeds United have now have an offer for a long-term target at Sunderland.
Leeds United and Sunderland have enjoyed very different seasons in the Championship.
Both would’ve been hoping for a top six finish going into this campaign, though it’s only Leeds who look set to achieve that now.
Although the Black Cats aren’t mathematically out of the picture, it seems almost-impossible that they finish in the play-offs now.
Mike Dodds‘ side were thumped 5-1 at home to Blackburn Rovers on Easter Monday whilst Leeds United beat Hull City 3-1 to go 2nd.
Leeds United eyeing Sunderland transfer deal
Leeds United could now deal Sunderland a bit of a transfer blow.
The Whites took youngster Mason Cotcher on trial earlier this season, after the England U17s man was also training with Arsenal.
And The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath says that Leeds ‘have made an offer’ to sign Cotcher from Sunderland.
At one time a Manchester United youngster, Cotcher has 31 U18 Premier League appearances to his name in total, with 12 goals.
Sunderland set for Leeds United windfall
Previous reports from Sunderland Echo revealed that Sunderland would be due a compensation fee when Cotcher signs his first professional deal, should it be with another club.
The same report also revealed that the compensation fee would be ‘significantly less’ should Cotcher sign with a team outside of England amid previous links to Rangers.
So Cotcher signing for Leeds, whilst a blow for the Black Cats, will see the Wearside club pocket a decent compensation fee.
Mason Cotcher interest a credit to Academy of Light
Cotcher is yet another impressive name to come out of Sunderland’s Academy of Light.
He’ll have played alongside the likes of Chris Rigg who’s now an important first-team player at the Stadium of Light.
But for Cotcher, whether or not moving to Leeds is a good career move remains to be een.
Leeds have poached players from academies in the past and often times not given them game time, with Ian Poveda an example.
Whereas at Sunderland, Cotcher knows he’ll get game time if he manages to impress, so maybe staying on Wearside could be better for his immediate development.
Though it looks like a move to Leeds United is starting to move forward and it remains an exciting opportunity for the young Cotcher.
Sunderland’s first-team meanwhile return to Championship action against Bristol City this weekend, where they’ll look to avenge that disastrous Blackburn defeat.
