Ex-Red Sox Outfielder Inks Deal With Rival Yankees To Bolster Positional Depth

Boston will continue to face off against a former friend

The Boston Red Sox faithful will have to mentally prepare before seeing outfielder Alex Verdugo in pinstripes next season.

However, he will not be the only outfielder with Red Sox ties calling Yankee Stadium home for the 2024 season.

“Outfielder Greg Allen is signing a minor-league contract with the New York Yankees, sources say,” FanSided’s Robert Murray reported Tuesday. “The deal includes an invite to spring training.

Allen opened the 2023 season as a member of the Red Sox organization and impressed in his short stint.

The 30-year-old hit .250 with 11 extra-base hits including a pair of home runs, 15 RBIs, and a .795 OPS in 37 games for Triple-A Worcester. The veteran’s most impressive stat was his 23 stolen bases in as many attempts.

He was traded to the Yankees two months into the season in exchange for right-handed pitcher Diego Hernández and cash considerations.

After a pitstop with the Milwaukee Brewers, Allen is now heading back to the Yankees for his third stint in the organization.

Allen never received a big-league call-up in Boston last season but could finally share an outfield with Verdugo on the other side of the historic rivalry.

The speedy, slick defender will be a name to follow as he attempts to join a much-improved Yankees outfield at some point next season.
