Newcastle United - Newcastle United confirm squad list for first half of 2023/24 Premier League season

Outstanding’ Newcastle player could now be fit for Sunderland, hopes to return to training soon

Newcastle United could receive a late injury boost ahead of their FA Cup clash with Sunderland on Saturday.

Eddie Howe’s side continues to be hindered by injuries as they prepare for an absolutely huge game against their biggest rivals on Saturday, heading to the Stadium Of Light to face Sunderland.

They will be without Callum Wilson, with the Newcastle number nine due to miss the derby due to a calf problem. It also looks like the Magpies will be without Joe Willock, Harvey Barnes and Elliot Anderson, all of which are expected to remain sidelined.

Another player who is at risk of missing the FA Cup third round tie is Kieran Trippier, but the Northern Echo have provided an encouraging update on his status ahead of the Tyne-Wear derby.

Kieran Trippier could return for Newcastle against Sunderland

According to the Northern Echo, there is still a chance that Kieran Trippier could be available for the game against Sunderland.

He is a doubt after missing the Premier League defeat to Liverpool, with Eddie Howe unsure whether or not the 33-year-old would be fit in time for Saturday.

However, the Northern Echo state that Trippier is hoping to return to training in the next couple of days and make himself available for what would be his first ever taste of the Tyne-Wear derby.

It will be the first ever derby for most of this Newcastle team. Only Jamaal Lascelles and Paul Dummett have played in the fixture before.

But Trippier has experienced massive games in the past, and it will be a huge boost if he is passed fit to face Sunderland.

While he has been going through a rough patch as of late, there is no denying that he is an ‘outstanding‘ player who lifts those around him. If he is fit to start then we have a much better chance of triumphing in what is a must-win game.
