The Sky Blues are looking well-placed to improve on their fifth-placed finish last term, hoping to go one better this season and return to the Premier League after 23 years
Robins’ side earned their 13th win of the campaign away to struggling Stoke City over the weekend, remaining in the play-off positions on goal difference amid pressure from Norwich City and Hull City beneath them.
The Sky Blues are currently one of the in-form sides in the division, having taken 17 points from their last eight games, the joint-third best with the Canaries, and behind both Leeds United and Southampton.
And despite losing star man Viktor Gyokeres in the summer, Coventry have remained among the top scorers in the Championship, scoring 51 times this season, with the likes of Haji Wright and Callum O’Hare leading the way in the scoring charts.
They have also remained defensively solid, conceding 37 times this season, which is the joint-fifth best this season, which is great credit to the job Robins continues to do during his tenure in the West Midlands.
Gary McAllister believes reaching the play-offs would be “an achievement in itself” for Coventry City
Since Robins’ return to Coventry back in 2017, the club have enjoyed some excellent football, even won trophies along the way.
After sacking former manager Russell Slade in March, the 54-year-old would go on to win the EFL Trophy final at Wembley against Oxford United a month later, followed by promotion from League Two the following season, breaking numerous records across the campaign to earn their first promotion in 51 years.
Promotion to the Championship would follow in the 2019/20 season, with the continued improvement evident as the club bettered their league finish season upon season in the second tier, reaching Wembley last term but lost to Luton Town on penalties.
This season, the club are hoping to go one better, but face stiff competition from the top sides in the division, with all three relegated Premier League clubs battling it out for the two automatic promotion places.
And former midfielder McAllister praised Robins’ work at the Coventry Building Society Arena, and explained that a play-off finish this term would be an achievement in itself, given the quality of sides they are up against.
