Bayern Munich consider Burnley boss Vincent Kompany for head coach role

Vincent Kompany savaged by Bayern Munich board member after receiving call to quit Burnley

Vincent Kompany is reportedly being lined up for a shock move to take charge at Bayern Munich.

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has been savaged by Bayern Munich board member Uli Hoeness after reportedly being contacted about the prospect of replacing Thomas Tuchel at the Allianz Arena. Kompany led Burnley to the Championship title during his first season in management but was unable to mastermind the Clarets’ Premier League survival during the 2023/24 campaign as his side were dumped into the second tier once again.

Kompany, who signed a new five-year contract last summer, received plenty of plaudits for his style of football during Burnley’s latest stint in the Premier League. But the Lancashire outfit were only able to secure five league wins all season as they finished eight points adrift of safety in 19th position.

According to football guru Fabrizio Romano, Kompany has received a direct call from the Bayern board as they search for a new boss. The former defender, who was open to the discussions, has been placed on Bayern’s wish list and their interest has been confirmed after they talked about him internally.

But when quizzed about Kompany on Monday, Bayern’s former president and vice-chairman Hoeness appeared to be under the impression the 38-year-old was being linked to the club as a player rather than as their manager.

“Vincent Kompany? You journalists pull a new name out of your nose every other day. No thank you, we are very happy with [Matthijs] De Ligt and [Eric] Dier,” he exclaimed.

Bayern announced in February that Tuchel would be heading through the Allianz Arena exit at the end of the campaign, with the former Chelsea boss going on to lead his side to a third-place Bundesliga finish following an underwhelming season.

Bayern have already approached a whole host of star names to take over from Tuchel, with candidates including Xabi Alonso, Unai Emery and Ralf Rangnick reportedly rejecting the club’s advances. But Kompany could still take some convincing to move to Germany after already laying out his plans for next season in England.

“I’m not here sulking and feeling sorry for us, but if you take every game, every season as a learning experience, this is a step we need to get into our game,” Kompany said after Burnley’s relegation was confirmed earlier this month.

“Today the Premier League is over but tomorrow we start day one of doing everything we can to get back to the Premier League. It’s way too early to answer if I’d have done things differently. I’m constantly thinking about what we could do better right now and before. But if you treat it as something which improves you, us as a club and a group of players, there is a lot of value in what we have experienced this season.”
