Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence on Possible 2024 Extension: ‘I’m Not Really Worried About That’
Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is going to sign a big-money contract sooner than later. The only question is when. Last offseason, it seemed as if the Jaguars were prepared to make a 2024 extension happen for the former No. 1 pick. Now, though, it has become a question of exactly when the Jaguars will extend their franchise quarterback. “It’s something I’m not concerned with. Obviously I would love to get a deal done at some point, whether it’s this year, next year, who knows. I’m not really worried about that,” Lawrence said this week on NFL Network.
But obviously you want to have some security and you want to make money. You want to play and do as well as you can. But at the same time, I know I have a job to do regardless, whether I get the extension this year, next year, whatever it is, I have the same job to do. It’s not going to change. I gotta prepare myself to be the best player I can be next season and take us as far as we can go.” Lawrence finished the season completing 65.6% of his passes for 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, along with seven lost fumbles. Lawrence also missed his first career start as he dealt with four different injuries, with Lawrence seemingly having to limp to the finish of the
season. “I think Trevor had another learning year, like we all do when we are a third-year guy in this league. I think there are some areas he made great strides in,” Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke said last month. “You look at this season, the two things we’ve got to do are we’ve got to do a better job of keeping him safe and protected, and he’s got to do a better job of protecting himself. Unfortunately, he had four key injuries this year. When your
quarterback has a throwing shoulder injury, a knee injury, an ankle injury, and a concussion all in one year that’s alarming.” “So, we’ve got to work to improve that and that’s not one factor, there’s a lot of things that contribute to that, but we do have to do a better job there. As far as Trevor and the long term relationship with this team, there’s no doubt in that. We’re going to get something done at the appropriate time.”
