Southampton in race to sign ‘sensational’ defender who plays just like Cristian Romero

Southampton have been linked with yet another centre-back at a time when Russell Martin will be far more concerned with attacking incomings.

When Southampton were promoted in the Championship play-off final they also secured the permanent signing of Taylor Harwood-Bellis for £20 million as per the terms of the loan deal with Manchester City.

Jan Bednarek and Jack Stephens remain at the club going into the season, whilst young duo Ronnie Edwards and Nathan Wood both arrived this summer for £3 million each.

Another new arrival was the signing of free agent Charlie Taylor who is primarily a left-back but played at centre-back on numerous occasions under Vincent Kompany at Burnley.

That gives Russell Martin six options at centre-back, whilst he has only seen Ben Brereton Diaz added to a sparse frontline.

Southampton linked with Nordsjaelland defender Adamo Nagalo

Given the wealth of options Southampton have in defence, you would think the club would be focusing all their attention on attacking recruits for the remainder of the summer.

However, this does not appear to necessarily be the case, with the Saints always on the lookout for young talent regardless of position.

That constant search looks to have taken them to Denmark, with Southampton reportedly one of a number of clubs showing interest in NordsJaelland centre-back Adamo Nagalo.

That is according to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, who claim that PSV are interested in the 21-year-old after being priced out of a move for Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg; a player Southampton were also linked with earlier in the summer.

The report goes on to claim that there is ‘a lot of competition’ for Nagalo and names Southampton, as well as RC Lens and Lille, as potential suitors.

Who is Southampton target Adamo Nagalo?

Nagala is product of the famed Right to Dream academy who are responsible for developing talents such as Mohammed Kudos and Southampton’s Kamaldeen Sulemana.

Despite being just 21, Nagalo has already amassed 113 senior appearances for Nordsjaelland and 15 caps for Burkina Faso in an impressive start to his career.

A 6ft 1ins centre-back, Nagalo is highly rated for his ability on the ball, which may be what has piqued Southampton’s interest given Martin’s possession principles.

Described as a ‘polished distributor’ whose ‘ability on the ball is sensational’ by scout Antonio Mango, Nagalo has been compared to World Cup winning Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Cristian Romero due to his ‘proactive and aggressive approach’.
