Sheffield Wednesday are rapidly making plans for the upcoming summer transfer window.

Sheffield Wednesday can finally crack on with their summer preparations after avoiding the drop, completing their great escape in the Championship after beating Sunderland 2-0 on the final day.

The Owls finish the campaign in 20th place of the table and can finally start to build something under Danny Rohl, after several years of papering over cracks, sacking managers and so on.

And Rohl has been speaking to the press in his native Germany this week. He discussed the season, managing in England, and the Sheffield Wednesday fans whom he adores.

Rohl has also discussed some of his favourite players from his days working with Red Bull Leipzig, and three he’d love to have playing under his watch one day.

Speaking to RBlive, Rohl was asked if he could hypothetically sign three players from his former club Red Bull Leipzig, who would they be.

He replied:

“Lois Openda, Dani Olmo and Willi Orban.”

Openda is a Belgian international with 16 caps, Olmo has 33 caps for Spain and eight goals, whilst Orban has 43 caps for Hungary, and all three of which are still at Leipzig.

Whilst all three are international superstars and likely well beyond the reach of Sheffield Wednesday, it does suggest one thing.

The Danny Rohl factor at Sheffield Wednesday

Wednesday welcomed former German international Nico Schulz earlier in the season, who was training with the Owls’ first-team whilst he was without a club.

Rohl later confirmed that Sheffield Wednesday would not be signing the left-back, though it suggested that Rohl may well have a very attractive force in the transfer market, especially with footballers from Germany or currently playing in Germany.

His contacts list after working with Red Bull Leipzig, Bayern Munich, Southampton, and the German national team will likely come in very useful at some point in his coaching career; maybe even now at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls have a squad to rebuild once again this summer but Rohl will be hoping to rebuild it for the long-term.

He knows top quality players at top quality teams like Openda, Olmo, and Orban, and he may well be able to raid some of his former clubs for some loan signings this summer, with money likely to be tight once again for the Owls.

Either way, it looks set to be a very intriguing and potentially promising summer for Sheffield Wednesday.
