Phil Parkinson must make one brutal Jordan Davies decision at Wrexham this summer
Wrexham have some big decisions to make with the future of some players this summer and midfielder Jordan Davies falls into that category.
While elation surrounds the club after clinching back-to-back promotions for the first time in their history, stepping up to League One will require a big change in personnel.
Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds had a clear out, releasing eight first-team players upon the expiry of their contracts this summer, including long-serving stars Luke Young and Ben Tozer.
Phil Parkinson said the reason behind letting go of those players is to make room for several incomings as league rules state only a squad of 22 players can be registered.
Homegrown midfielder Jordan Davies is one player who could be placed on the chopping block this summer.
Wrexham could cash in on Jordan Davies this summer
Davies returned to his hometown club in 2020 and like many in red, has played a pivotal role in their rise from the National League.
The 25-year-old rose to stardom at Wrexham for his ability to score goals from midfield, with his best scoring season coming in the 2021/22 campaign, striking 15 times in 39 appearances.
Wrexham would miss out on promotion that year after losing to Grimsby Town in the play-off semi-final but Davies and his teammates would come back stronger by winning the title in 2023.
After featuring 27 times in the fifth tier, a mix of injury troubles and falling out of favour have seen the Welshman’s game time restricted in League Two, starting just twice despite scoring in stunning style in their 5-3 opening-day loss to MK Dons.
Lauded ‘great’ by Parkinson, Davies has slipped down the pecking order at Wrexham, which could point towards them cashing in on him this summer. It would hurt many supporters to see him go, but it’s hard to see him playing much in the third tier.
Wrexham’s formidable midfield trio
Davies is a talented midfielder who could get into almost any midfield in League Two.
However, due to the experience and quality of George Evans, Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee – Parkinson’s preferred trio – the former Brighton & Hove Albion player hasn’t had a look in.
And as Wrexham make the big leap into League One, Parkinson will likely utilise this trio once more as it looks tailor-made to tackle the third tier.
This emphasizes adding individuals to the squad who can improve that position, putting Davies’ minutes at extra threat.
With his contract expiring in 2025, Wrexham’s Hollywood owners could make the brutal decision to cash in on their hometown hero this summer instead of losing him on a free next summer.
