Updated: Chicago Bears sign two tight ends, shuffle practice squad

Earlier today, the Chicago Bears signed tight end Stephen Carlson from their practice squad to the 53-man roster. Carlson takes the spot that was vacated when they placed running back Travis Homer on injured reserve.

The 27-year-old Carlson has played in 26 games as a pro, the last of which was in 2023 with the Bears. He has experience lining up at H-Back and has logged 450 snaps on special teams. In the 2024 preseason, he caught five balls for 36 yards with the Bears.

To take his place on the practice squad, the Bears inked tight end Teagan Quitoriano (6’6”, 259), who was originally a fifth-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2022 from Oregon State. He has appeared in 16 games with 11 starts, making nine receptions for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

Besides Quitoriano, the Bears hosted several players today at Halas Hall for a workout, including offensive linemen Tremayne Anchrum and Austen Pleasants, running backs Jake Funk, Tony Jones, and Anthony McFarland, and quarterback Chris Oladokun.

UPDATED: On Wednesday morning the Bears announced they’ve signed cornerback Ameer Speed to the practice squad and released corner Ro Torrence from the practice squad. Speed (6’3”, 215) entered the league as a 6th-round pick of the Patriots in 2023 out of Michigan State and has played in 13 games in his career, all on special teams.

The Chicago Bears will be honoring Hispanic Heritage with special performances for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams, including one a halftime performance from the Mariachi Herencia de México group. Marco Villela, the band musical director and trumpet stopped by ABC 7 Eyewitness News to talk about their upcoming performance and new album.

After a huge Monday Night Football performance against the Cincinnati Bengals, everyone is talking about Washington Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. While this year was supposed to belong to Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears, the first overall pick viewed as a runaway favorite to be named Offensive Rookie of the Year, Daniels has set himself a step ahead of the field with some electrifying play through three weeks.

Most fans and even voices in the sports media initially dismissed Daniels relative to Williams, both in terms of short-term hardware and as a prospect in the big picture, but things can change very

quickly in the NFL. However, one key football voice, one involved with coverage of both college football and the NFL, may have been ahead of the curve when it comes to the LSU alum.

In a December appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Kirk Herbstreit projected that Daniels would be “the steal of the draft,” projecting that the reigning Heisman Trophy winner would be overlooked in favor of Williams and Drake Maye, but could have just as much upside, if not more.
