3 midfielders Sheffield Wednesday must eye amid exodus in key area

Sheffield Wednesday are in for a busy transfer window, and it looks as though midfield is an area in need of a few signings.

Sheffield Wednesday fans are still nervously waiting to see the fate of manager Danny Rohl confirmed amid talks over his future but regardless of who is at the helm, a busy summer awaits.

Plenty of signings will be needed if the Owls are to push up the Championship table and one area that looks in need of replenishment is the midfield.

There’s a bit of an exodus in the middle of the park at Hillsborough. Talks are ongoing to keep legend Barry Bannan and key man Will Vaulks, but Tyreeq Bakinson and George Byers have been released while Momo Diaby and Jeff Hendrick’s loans are ending.

For that reason, the club are going to need to eye some midfield options. Here, we put forward three that Sheffield Wednesday should keep in mind.

Ivan Sunjic – Birmingham City

It has been confirmed that Sunjic will be leaving Birmingham City this summer and while it would not be a surprise if he has interest overseas, Championship clubs like Sheffield Wednesday should be eyeing the Croatian.

On a free transfer, the hard-working midfielder could be a shrewd signing for the Owls. He’s more than familiar with Championship football and can operate as either a central or defensive midfielder.

Warrington’s fate is yet to be confirmed but it seems highly likely that he moves on from Everton this summer when his deal expires. That will surely pique interests in the EFL.

He struggled for game time in a spell with Championship rivals Plymouth Argyle in the first half of the season but with another shot in the second-tier, Warrington is capable of really kicking on.

The 21-year-old previously starred in League One and could be ready to kick on at a permanent home. Under a coach like Rohl, Sheffield Wednesday could be a great place for him to develop.

Robin Heusser – SV Wehen Wiesbaden

A little more of a left-field option would be 25-year-old midfielder Heusser, who currently plays for relegation-threatened 2. Bundesliga outfit SV Wehen Wiesbaden.

Rohl’s German links could be of great use in the transfer market and a Heusser would be a really shrewd signing. In a struggling side, he’s notched a goal and nine assists in 35 games this season.

Heusser has been a creative source throughout his career but having spent his entire career to date in Germany, a move overseas to Hillsborough could be tempting.
