Wrexham squad is good but Phil Parkinson wants new signings As Considerations Was Placed On The Attacking Position
PHIL PARKINSON wants new signings so Wrexham are competitive at a higher level but he believes that he already has a group of players that can continue “taking the club forward”.
The Reds finished the League Two campaign with five successive wins to secure runners-up spot and clinch back-to-back promotions for the first time in the club’s history.
Parkinson announced his retained list on Friday and first-team captain Luke Young, club captain Ben Tozer and centre-back Aaron Hayden were among eight out of contract players who have been released.
Although he is keen to make new additions ahead of Wrexham’s first season in League One since 2004-05, Parkinson feels he already has a decent squad that can continue the journey with the Reds.
“The aim has always been to improve what we have got in each transfer window but also maintaining our key players,” said Parkinson, who has the likes of leading scorer Paul Mullin and playmaker Elliot Lee under contract at The Racecourse.
“We have got a good core of players. We have always recruited with the long-term future in mind.
“As I have always said, it is important to bring players in who are good enough to carry on the journey with the club.
“Some players move on along the way and others come in.
“But I feel we have recruited players who can carry on with us and keep taking the club forward.”
Lee had another impressive season for the Reds and he scooped the Players’ Player of the Season award.
The only player who featured in every League Two fixture, Lee scored 16 goals to help Wrexham finish runners-up behind champions Stockport County and secure back-to-back promotions for the first time in the club’s history.
Thirteen of those goals came before the turn of the year when Lee filled the void left by star striker Paul Mullin who missed the start of Wrexham’s return to the Football League after suffering a punctured lung in pre-season.
Although he was less prolific in the second half of the campaign, Reds’ boss Phil Parkinson said the 29-year-old offered so much more than goals and can see why his team-mates voted for him.
“Players’ player is a very important trophy to win,” said Parkinson, who signed Lee in the summer of 2022 after the attacking midfielder left Luton Town.
“Sometimes it is forgotten how well Elliot did in the first two-thirds of the season.
“His goals dropped off a little bit but the players didn’t forget that and it is also recognition that even when the goals weren’t coming towards the end of the season, Elliot gave everything in every game.
“He leaves nothing out on the pitch. You can feel and detect the lads giving it their all when they are on the pitch and Elliot is like that every day in training.
