Rumor: Three-point specialist linked to the Phoenix Suns in free agency
Can the Suns bring Buddy Hield to the desert on a veteran minimum?
The offseason is here, and with comes speculation about who teams are interested in. Every day we will hear that the Phoenix Suns are linked to a specific player. Our hopes will rise, our thoughts will explore the plausibility, and our wonderment will begin.
This season is different than those of the past, however. Due to their second apron restrictions, there is not much Phoenix can do. Unless players are truly dedicated to the idea of being part of the team that wins the first title in organization history — which means you will be celebrated every five years with halftime recognition and a suite experience — it’s hard to see players lining up to take less and come to Phoenix. Especially if they are attempting to cash in on their talents.
The most recent name link to Phoenix is that of sharpshooting guard Buddy Hield.
Hield, originally drafted 6th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft, has bounced around the league in his 7-year career. Starting with the New Orleans Pelicans, he was traded to the Sacramento Kings as a part of the DeMarcus Cousins trade in his rookie year of 2017. He remained in Sac Town for 6 seasons, being traded to the Indiana Pacers with Tyrese Haliburton for Domantas Sabonis.
This past season, Hield was once again the asset that sweetened the pot as he was dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers at the deadline as a part of a three-team deal that included the San Antonio Spurs. After coming off of a four-year, $90 million deal that he signed while with the Kings, Hield is entering free agency.
As a career 40% three-point shooter, he surely will garner plenty of attention as Evan Sidery, former Bright Side of the Sun contributor, notes above. The Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Denver Nuggets are rumored to be interested as well.
Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro, affectionately known as “The Reaper” for letting us know when deals won’t happen, says otherwise.
