Ohio State football closer to landing 4-star wideout to boost 2025 class

Ohio State football fans haven’t been thrilled with what they’ve seen on the field the past few years as they haven’t beaten rival Michigan since 2019, but one thing that hasn’t skipped a beat is recruiting. Credit where credit is due, Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day does a good job of getting top talent to Ohio State. One position that the Buckeyes especially excel at is wide receiver, and they are working hard to land a commitment from four-star WR Vernell Brown

Vernell Brown III was visiting Ohio State football recently, and the visit seemed to go well. Brown is obviously impressed with the track record of WR coach Brian Hartline, and he is also impressed with the overall state of the program. The Buckeyes seem to be in a good spot right now.

“I would say even bigger than coach Hartline, just the Ohio State atmosphere, they’re a really good team,” Brown said, according to a tweet from Mick Walker.

Brown is currently ranked as the #39 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class by 247 Sports. He is the #6 WR in the class and he is the #6 player in the state of Florida. He currently attends Jones High School in Orlando, Florida.

Ohio State football has done a good job recruiting Vernell Brown III, but there are obviously a lot of big-name schools that want to land his commitment. Brown is a Florida kid, so Florida football is certainly a team to watch here.

“I mean, I come from a Florida Gator family, so I definitely rooted for the Gators,” Brown said when he was asked by Josh Newberg who he rooted for growing up.

One important note in regard to Florida is that Brown’s dad played there. The Gators have been using that in their recruiting pitch.

“They use a little bit of a different approach than everyone else, just because they can with my dad playing there,” Brown said when he was asked about how Florida has been recruiting him. “They use that legacy approach. They’ve done that a lot recently, just saying it would mean more for me playing at home, essentially.”
