Barry Bannan names Sheffield Wednesday’s ‘biggest signing’ as summer business continues

Barry Bannan thinks that no matter who Sheffield Wednesday sign this summer, none will be bigger than the signing of Danny Röhl’s new contract.

The German manager and his captain have developed a good relationship since their working relationship started back in October, with both having been full of praise for the other as they navigated their way through a tough campaign that ended with the completion of their Great Escape at Sunderland.

Both penned new contracts back in May, not long after the season came to an end, and since then there have been plenty of other incomings at Hillsborough as Röhl looks to put together a side that can do more than battle against relegation in what will be his first full season as manager.

There’s a growing air of positivity around Hillsborough at the moment, which is no surprise given the recent goings on, and Bannan believes that the manager committing his future to the club has played a huge part in that.

“It was massive,” he told The Star. “Even little things like with people being out of contract it might help them to stay for next season, might make it easier for them because they know who the manager is. So him committing to another couple of seasons was a big mental boost for the club. And it helps attract players as well if we’re going to sign them.

“You’ve seen his calibre at the Euros when he was commentating, and his profile is massive. That helps when it comes to signing players. I think he was the biggest signing for the club this summer, and even if we sign more players now I don’t think they’ll be bigger than the manager staying.”

Wednesday are back in action for the first time this weekend when they take on Alfreton Town at the Impact Arena, and plenty of Owls fans will be making the trip hoping to get a glimpse of their new signings in action.
