Though job responsibilities will remain fairly consistent, the members of the Alabama defense and the fan base alike are getting acclimated to new terminology in Kane Wommack’s 4-2-5 defensive scheme.

One of the most important spots on the defense is the Husky, previously known as the Star under Nick Saban and also called the nickel corner, slot corner, and other names across college football.

The Husky has to be one of the most versatile players on the field. He typically has some safety traits, as he must be able to hold up in coverage but also has to be physical against the run. The

Husky is sometimes responsible for the edge, and, playing so close to the line of scrimmage, often functions as an undersized outside linebacker. Ideally, the Husky is a ballhawk and a playmaker, adept at blitzing and generally causing headaches for opposing offensive coordinators.

Alabama has been set at the position for the last four seasons with class of 2020 products Brian Branch and Malachi Moore holding it down. Both Branch, a second-round pick in 2023, and Moore, who is back for his fifth season, proved to be excellent players in many respects.

Even as it returns Moore, who started at the position last season, Alabama will be breaking in a new starter at Husky in 2024. Malachi Moore is expected to transition back to a more traditional safety role, while redshirt junior Devonta Smith is the leader to assume the Husky role.

However, the job is far from won. Though he enters his fourth season in the program, Smith primarily played special teams during his first two years and battled injuries that cost him most of the 2023 season. As a result, he has very little proven production with just 6 career tackles in 23 appearances. His familiarity with the college game gives him an advantage, but he will be pushed hard by true freshman Red Morgan.

Morgan was a revelation during spring practice, showing the coaching staff that he may be reliable even in year one. The Phenix City product has been compared to Malachi Moore, who was an impact player in the same role as a true freshman, by BamaOnline’s Jimmy Stein. Alabama receiver Kobe Prentice has also drawn parallels between Red Morgan and Caleb Downs, a lofty comparison to say the least.

Between Devonta Smith and Red Morgan, Alabama should have two solid options at the Husky this season. I expect the competition at this position to go into fall camp and beyond.
