Coventry City: The perfect like-for-like Callum O’Hare replacement is Joao Mario

FLW looks at the data which claims the two are like-for-like midfielders

Callum O’Hare has been a key influence in Coventry City’s resurgence up the Championship table in recent months.

Unsurprisingly, the Solihull-born playmaker hasn’t been short of admirers for quite some time, and they recently emerged following his rich vein of form after a long-term layoff between December 2022 and October 2023.

Everybody has become accustomed to the Sky Blues’ recent recruitment drives, which have seen the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer arrive in this part of the West Midlands, before going on to be sold for substantial profits.

Here at Football League World, we’ve looked at who Fbref claim would be the most like-for-like replacement for O’Hare if he was to seek a new challenge away from the CBS Arena.

This comes after the trio of Burnley, Leicester City and Southampton were all said to be interested in the recent transfer window, as per HITC Football.

Callum O’Hare’s average statistics for Coventry City

Based on O’Hare’s position as an attacking midfielder behind the main focal point in Mark Robins’s side, which has either been Ellis Simms or Haji Wright since his return to the side, Fbref allows for comparisons to be drawn among both centre-forwards and attacking midfielders.

Given the skill-set required to play the differing roles, the percentile rankings based on O’Hare’s stats are differing, particularly when it comes to his average of 0.45 non-penalty goals over the last 365-day period.

Based on the strikers he’s compared to, O’Hare places within the top 4% percentile of players of a similar ilk, compared to standing just below the top 25% in comparison to fellow attacking midfielders, the position he’s obviously more natural in.

For reference, the centre-forward who is said to be the most like-for-like replacement if O’Hare was to depart is Red Star Belgrade’s Jean-Philippe Krasso.
