Former Boston Bruins forward Jake DeBrusk opens up about NHL Trade Market and why he chose Vancouver Canucks as his No.1 pick in the latest interview. Following seven seasons with the black and gold jackets, DeBrusk found himself in the midst of trade rumors a year back.
Whether his contract will be renewed or will he join another NHL team was often debated. However, Canucks remained one of the strong competitors in DeBrusk’s trade market, ultimately signing him up with a 7-year $38.5 million contract.
His current contract will offer him $5.5 million annually, a significant rise from his deal with Boston at 2-year $4 million AAV. Considering his last season’s performance with 19 goals and 40 points in 80 games, Canucks felt he was a necessary piece to complete their team for the 2024-25 season.
Furthermore, Canucks has hooked up DeBrusk in his prime years considering he’s 27 right now. When asked why he chose Vancouver Canucks as his next team, he said “They were very aggressive” in their approach and both were mutually interested in the deal.
Now with a secured spot in an NHL team with a better deal, DeBrusk admits feeling “lucky and fortunate to be in that position.” He described the free agency as “It’s been pretty intense” as there was lot of mental pressure involved. Luckily for him, DeBrusk found his “stability” which “I’ve never had.”
Canucks GM Patrik Allvin has high expectations from Jake DeBrusk
Although his stint with the Boston Bruins came to an end, Jake DeBrusk has become one of the key members of the Vancouver Canucks with his latest signing. Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin believes he can be on the starting roster with Elias Pettersson unless head coach Rick Tocchet decides otherwise.
Allvin believes DeBrusk is a “responsible two-way guy” whose “versatility” and “speed” will be important for the team. He notes,
The result of the signing will be seen in the 2024-25 regular season games. After signing with the Canucks, DeBrusk posted a heartfelt message on his Instagram account, thanking the fans, staff, and players for supporting him all through these years.
