Newcastle United Are In Advanced Talks To Recruit This Bournemouth Defender who will replace the veteran
Newcastle United are in advanced talks to recruit Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly as they look to bolster their defence this summer.
In a recent report, The Evening Standard claimed that Newcastle United are in advanced talks to recruit Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly this summer. It has been stated that the Magpies are eyeing a move for the English centre-back on a free transfer later this year.
Kelly’s Impressive Form In Premier League Football
Kelly has produced a run of impressive displays at the heart of the Bournemouth backline during this Premier League campaign. The English talent has participated in 24 matches for the Cherries this season, netting one goal and grabbing one assist in multiple competitions.
The 25-year-old has been a rock at the back for the English club as he is averaging 1.1 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 2.7 clearances per game in the Premier League. He has even been tidy when distributing possession from inside his half after completing 77.8% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Vitality Stadium will run out this summer which could open the door for the Magpies to acquire his services on a free transfer.
Is Kelly A Good Choice For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
Kelly is a tough-tackling defender who can time his challenges well to make some important interceptions for his side on the defensive third of the pitch. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and can play his way out from the back.
The Bristol-born sensation can use his robust 1.90m frame to win a few 50-50 duels in the air. He has already proven himself in the Premier League and won’t take much time to settle into life at Newcastle if Eddie Howe can find a way to lure him to St. James’ Park this summer.
At 25, Kelly is about to enter his prime and is on an expiring contract. Thus, he would be a great choice for the Magpies to consider at the end of this campaign. We can expect Kelly to add more bite and steel to Howe’s defence and help the Tyneside club compete across all fronts in the coming years.
With all things considered, Newcastle United would be wise to offer the English defensive ace a long-term contract when he becomes a free agent later this summer.
Erik ten Hag’s faulty tactics this season have meant a lack of cover from midfield which has not helped the defence with the goalkeeper usually having to contend with a barrage of shots every game.
It is clear to see that reinforcements are required with new co-owners INEOS looking to trim the wage bill by letting go of experienced players.
Raphael Varane has already announced that he is leaving while Jonny Evans could follow suit. Both Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have been linked with potential exits.
