Wrexham AFC told to make signing as “next step” after Phil Parkinson transfer revealled

Former striker Andy Morrell thinks the Red Dragons should look across the pond to find value in the transfer market.

Wrexham AFC should take the plunge to sign their first player from the United States, according to former striker Andy Morrell.

It follows Red Dragons manager Phil Parkinson declaring that he will not pay over the odds to attract new stars to the club during the summer transfer window as they prepare for life in League One.

Speaking to BBC Sport Wales, the 56-year-old looked to counter the “big spender” label often attached to the North Wales side since they were taken over by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Parkinson said: “We have a value of players we go for and, if it goes above that, we just move away from it.

“I think it’s important that we do that because there isn’t an endless pot of money.

“We’re working towards a budget to try and sign players that offer us value going forward. We’re not going to pay over the odds for players.”

Morrell, who managed Wrexham between 2011 and 2014, believes Parkinson should look over the pond in his quest to find value for money.

Interest in the club from the US has surged since the launch of the ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary, with large numbers of Americans making the trip across the Atlantic to see the team in action.

Morrell witnessed their popularity first hand after flying to North Carolina last June to compete for the North Walians in a seven-a-side competition, known as ‘The Soccer Tournament’ (TST).

The Wrexham squad was joined by two young American players in Nicolas Cavallo and Filip Mirkovic, and the club legend was impressed by their performances.

Speaking to the Racecourse Ramble podcast, Morrell said: “I think Wrexham will be looking at an American and that’s probably the next step for that market.

“We had two lads with us at TST – one’s gone into the MLS draft and done really well.

“For somebody like that who would generate interest from over there, I think that would be something that would interest them if the player were good enough.

“They will be looking to see if they can get value for money because in the transfer market over here, you see the fees that are shouted up for some players, and it’s crazy.”

Wrexham held several pre-season friendlies in the US last summer, which proved to be hugely successful.

First-team players will be flying across again in July, with fixtures scheduled against the likes of Chelsea and Bournemouth.
