Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has accused Hartlepool of reneging on the offer of a new contract after he was dismissed as manager of the National League club at the weekend, writes the PA News agency.

A former Sunderland player has reiterated his desire to replace Michael Beale.

Sunderland are still on the lookout for their next manager after sacking Beale back in February.

He lasted just 12 games in charge and since, interim boss Mike Dodds has overseen 12 games, taking just two wins compared to Beale’s four.

Sunderland linked with Rene Maric during manager hunt

Former Leeds United and Borussia Dortmund assistant Rene Maric has now been linked with the Sunderland job.

It’s claimed that the Black Cats have ‘made contact’ with 31-year-old Maric, who is currently in charge of Bayern Munich’s U19s side.

He now joins names like fellow German Danny Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday, Paul Heckingbottom and Will Still in the Sunderland managerial race.
