Veteran pitcher who spent 2 years with Tigers signs with Pirates
Wily Peralta is aiming to get back to the big leagues for the first time since he pitched for the Detroit Tigers in 2022.
Peralta, who turns 35 in May, has signed a minor-league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray.
The right-hander spent last season at the Washington Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate after pitching in the big leagues for the Tigers in 2021 and 2022.
He posted a 2.58 ERA in 38 1/3 innings out of the bullpen in 2022. He walked 24 and stuck out 32.
In 2021, Peralta made 18 starts and posted a 3.07 ERA over 93 2/3 innings, helping save a depleted rotation in the middle of the summer.
Peralta was one out away from finishing the season with an ERA below 3.00. He would have become just the fifth Tiger in the last 30 years to throw at least 90 innings and have a sub-3.00 ERA.
Although he had hoped for a Major League contract in 2022, Peralta ended up re-signing with the Tigers on a minor-league deal after the conclusion of the lockout, arriving late to spring training due to visa issues.
Peralta began his career with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he pitched for parts of six seasons. He also spent two seasons with the Kansas City Royals.
