NFL insider ‘can’t believe’ Patriots’ free-agent steal this offseason
ESPN’s Mina Kimes still can’t believe the New England Patriots brought back a 10-sack player for so cheap.
Kimes, an NFL analyst for ESPN, appeared on the Patriots Press Pass podcast and appeared to still be baffled by the surprisingly cheap deal to bring back young pass rusher Josh Uche.
“I mean, I still can’t believe that Josh Uche contract,” Kimes said. “Maybe you can explain that to me, I didn’t really – I guess he wants to bet on himself.”
The Patriots brought back the 25-year-old Uche on a one-year deal worth $3 million deal, including $2.3 million guaranteed.
The deal could be worth up to $8 million with incentives, but still pales in comparison to money Uche could have pursued on the free-agent market. Uche reportedly turned down a two-year deal for $15 million with $11 million guaranteed.
After signing the deal, Uche explained to reporters why he took a deal that appeared to be a discount for New England.
“The Patriots were the organization that gave me a chance in the NFL. It’s like family. It feels like home and there’s nowhere else I’d rather be than home. So I think that was my main reason: Loyalty, family and love,” Uche said. “Coach (Jerod) Mayo is developing a lot of tough young men, and I feel like it’s something I just want to continue to be a part of. I think it’s just going to be great. I think the future is bright.
“I’m just happy to be home and get back to doing what I do best,” he continued.
The signing was a positive sign for a Patriots team that has needs up and down the roster.
Uche posted a career-high 11.5 sacks as part of a breakout 2022 season. However, his production took a step back in 2023. With star pass rusher Matthew Judon injured opposite him, Uche recorded just three sacks in 2023.
The outside perception is that Uche’s production fell since teams didn’t have to worry about Judon wreaking havoc on the other side of the ball. With Judon expected to return, Uche could be lined up for a rebound season.
