One ‘relentless’ Premier League striker could ease latest Paul Mullin blow at Wrexham
Phil Parkinson could ease the blow of losing Paul Mullin to injury by signing a ‘relentless’ Premier League striker this summer.
For the second year running, Wrexham could be without their talisman Paul Mullin for the start of a league campaign.
In 2023/24, Mullin missed the first eight matches in League Two after suffering a punctured lung in a pre-season friendly against Manchester United.
That period out of the side didn’t affect his confidence, though, as the Liverpool-born striker fired 26 goals in all competitions to seal Wrexham’s return to League One.
Now, following spinal surgery to correct a long-term lower back/hamstring issue, the 29-year-old could miss the opening exchanges of their third-tier journey.
This has prompted calls for Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds to dip into the transfer window and one current Premier League forward could temporarily fill the huge void.
Wrexham should look at Freddie Ladapo to temporarily replace Paul Mullin
Freddie Ladapo is currently at Ipswich Town, who are riding the crest of back-to-back promotions, resulting in a return to the Premier League.
Ladapo played a vital role in their promotion success in League One, with the 31-year-old scoring 17 goals in 46 league appearances for the Tractor Boys.
Sadly, the Romford-born striker was unable to follow that up with a regular streak of scoring in the Championship, netting just twice in 17 outings.
Admittedly, 15 of those appearances did come from the bench and Ladapo was loaned out to Charlton Athletic in January, where his struggles continued.
In eight starts for the Addicks, he scored just once however, at Wrexham, he can recapture his best scoring form and temporarily ease the blow of losing Mullin.
Freddie Ladapo is an expert at scoring in League One
Ladapo is surplus to requirements at Ipswich and with his contract expiring in 2025, it won’t take more than a six-figure fee to prise him away from Portman Road.
Therefore, going down the avenue of signing the Premier League striker could be profitable and that is echoed by his goal record in League One.
Once dubbed “relentless” by Mark Bonner, Ladapo has hit double figures for goals in his last four campaigns in the third tier – disregarding his most recent spell at Charlton.
To put it simply, Ladapo is a League One goal machine and if they were to sign him, they’d be almost guaranteed to see a double-figure return from the experienced striker, barring any injuries.
In a period where their third-tier rivals have strengthened with top strikers; Birmingham City signing Alfie May and Rotherham capturing Jonson Clarke-Harris, Wrexham could follow suit by landing the Ipswich Town talisman.
