Browns Sign TE, RB Amid Disastrous David Njoku, Pierre Strong Injury News
On Saturday, the Cleveland Browns announced they signed a running back and tight end to the active roster. The moves come a day after the Browns ruled out tight end David Njoku (ankle) and running back Pierre Strong (hamstring) against the New York Giants. According to a Browns statement, the team made five roster moves on Saturday, including the signings of running back Gary Brightwell and tight end Blake Whiteheart.
“The Cleveland Browns have signed RB Gary Brightwell and TE Blake Whiteheart to the active roster from the practice squad. The team has also elevated CB Tony Brown II and TE Geoff Swaim from the practice squad. In addition, the Browns have signed LB Nathaniel Watson to the practice squad,” per the Browns website.
The Giants drafted the six-foot-one, 220-pound Brightwell in the sixth round of the 2021 draft. He’s appeared in 37 games. He’s carried the ball 41 times for 164 yards and one touchdown in his career.
Brightwell is set to play his former team, the Giants, on Sunday. The Arizona Cardinals initially signed Whiteheart as an undrafted free agent in 2023. The six-foot-four, 247-pound tight end appeared in three games in his NFL career. Whiteheart has no offensive stats. He’s played 17 snaps on special teams, including eight snaps for the Browns in Week 2. Njoku will miss his second consecutive game on Sunday. He missed all three days of practice this week with an ankle injury.

The quarterback hasn’t quite figured out his timing and accuracy just yet, but in Week 2 against Jacksonville he showed some signs of life as both a passer and runner.
The offensive line has done well to protect Watson and open up lanes in the run game, though they’re still missing a huge part of the puzzle in Jack Conklin.
Conklin practiced throughout the week, but was limited on Friday and now appears to have suffered a setback via Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com.
“Browns downgraded OT Jack Conklin to OUT with a hamstring injury,” Stapleton reported.
