DONE DEAL: In order to replace their injured great pitcher, the Philadelphia Phillies have finally agreed to pay $145 million to buy a top pitcher from the Boston Red Sox

Phillies, Zack Wheeler Agree to Three-Year Contract Extension

The Philadelphia Phillies made headlines on Monday with the announcement of Zack Wheeler’s three-year contract extension, covering the period from 2025 to the end of the 2027 season. This deal ensures Wheeler’s continued presence with the team, eliminating any chance of him becoming a free agent in the upcoming fall.

Contract Details and Implications

According to a report from ESPN, the contract is valued at an impressive $126 million, making it one of the most lucrative extensions in MLB history in terms of average annual value. Wheeler will earn an annual salary of $42 million, placing him among the highest-paid pitchers in the league, alongside the likes of Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander.

“I’ve really just enjoyed being here in Philly,” Wheeler said Monday. “The fans are the best. Playing in Citizens Bank in October, there’s nothing like it.”

Team Dynamics and Support

Wheeler is currently in the final season of a five-year, $118 million deal. He has been a standout performer for the Phillies, who have made significant investments in star players like Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Aaron Nola in recent seasons. Speculation had been rife this spring about the likelihood of another deal between the right-hander and the team.

“I was happy he got over the 40 million mark because he’s one of the best pitchers in baseball the last couple of years.” Harper said Monday. “So, he definitely deserves it, man.

Wheeler’s new contract does not include a formal no-trade clause. However, he will soon earn 10-and-5 rights, granting him the authority to veto any potential trade after completing his fifth season with the Phillies.

“I think it works out for me, I think it works out for the team,” Wheeler said. “I’d rather have it now than go to free agency and see what happens.”

Team Commitment: Phillies’ Stance on Wheeler’s Future

The Phillies have firmly dismissed any notions of trading Wheeler, given his stellar performance with the team. He boasts a 3.06 ERA and 675 strikeouts over 629⅓ innings in his first four seasons. Wheeler’s accolades include leading the major leagues in innings pitched in 2021 and clinching a Gold Glove Award last season.

Owner John Middleton has categorically rejected the possibility of trading Wheeler. He aims to solidify the front of the Phillies’ rotation for the foreseeable future, with Wheeler and Nola signed on long-term, and Ranger Suarez emerging as a formidable third starter.
