Ipswich Town keen to take £15m Coventry City star to the Premier League

Ipswich Town are taking an interest in Coventry City midfielder Ben Sheaf, according to a report from The Sun.

Ipswich Town are heading for the Premier League and will be keen to add some new faces to their ranks this summer as they gear up for yet another step up.

Kieran McKenna’s current group of stars managed the rise from League One to the Championship with aplomb and many will be tipped to star in the top-flight too.

However, new signings will be needed, and it hasn’t taken long for some potential additions to be linked with moves to Portman Road ahead of their long-awaited return to Premier League football.

As per a report from The Sun, Ipswich Town are interested in taking Coventry City standout Ben Sheaf up from the Championship with them. The Sky Blues fell short in their promotion bid but with interest from the Tractor Boys, Fulham and Luton Town, he may yet be playing in the top-flight next season.

Luton are expected to retain interest even if they’re relegation too. A fee in the range of £10m is cited after another impressive season for Sheaf with Coventry.

A bargain deal?

Of course, it remains to be seen just what comes of these latest Sheaf rumours. However, you have to think that he’d be a steal at £10m.

The former Arsenal midfielder has been a standout player for a Coventry City side regularly battling for promotion and given the large fees they sold Gustavo Hamer and Viktor Gyokeres for last summer, you would fancy Sheaf to fetch something more significant than £10m.

Sheaf is under contract until 2026, so the Sky Blues are under no pressure to cash in.

£10m may be a slightly hopeful figure for any of Ipswich Town, Fulham or Luton Town this summer. Coventry are a club with their own ambitions and Sheaf can have a big part in their bid to get to the Premier League, so letting him go at that price would certainly raise eyebrows.

Smart recruitment from Ipswich Town

By signing players like Sheaf who have already starred at Championship level, Ipswich Town would be making smart additions for the present and future.

Many will tip him to find success upon a rise to the Premier League. The 26-year-old has continued to develop in recent seasons and if he can continue on this trajectory, there’s no reason why he can’t be a top-flight mainstay.

Sheaf has the ability to become a key player for Ipswich Town but also, in the event their stay with England’s elite only lasts one season, he’d be a standout at Championship level once more.

Or, if he were to star in a relegation season, a healthy profit could be made on his services.

Perhaps Ipswich aren’t looking quite that far into the future or considering that eventuality when promotion celebrations haven’t even stopped yet. However, it’s a factor that would make a move forr Sheaf a smart one this summer.
