The Niners also added a defensive tackle to the practice squad

On Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that the team was interested in adding a veteran cornerback to the practice squad.

The Niners worked out veteran Casey Hayward, who missed all of 2023 after his season was cut short in 2022 with a season-ending shoulder injury.

San Francisco must’ve worked out multiple cornerbacks, as they announced they signed cornerback Terrance Mitchell to the practice squad. Defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu was also added to the practice squad.

Mitchell is an eight-year veteran who signed with the 49ers on July 26, 2023 but was released on August 9. In 2021 and 2022, Mitchell started 56 games with the Houston Texans and the Tennesee Titans.

Okuayinonu appeared in six games with the Titans in 2022. He’s listed at 6’1”, 260 pounds. He was an undrafted free agent out of Maryland in 2022.

The corresponding moves placed cornerback Jason Verrett and safety Tayler Hawkins on the practice squad Injured Reserve List.

The 49ers also officially opened safety George Odum’s Injured Reserve practice window.

SANTA CLARA — Cornerback Terrance Mitchell, who spent two weeks in 49ers training camp, officially rejoined the team Wednesday to add veteran depth on their practice squad.

Mitchell, a 10th-year veteran, has not played this season. The Sacramento native went on Injured Reserve in mid-August and was released with an injury settlement. He’s previously played with the Cowboys, Bears, Chiefs, Browns, Texans, and Titans.

Mitchell essentially replaces Jason Verrett, who signed with the 49ers a month ago but saw his comeback end last Thursday when he sustained a torn rotator cuff in practice. The 49ers also worked out veteran safety Casey Hayward earlier this week.

Also, the 49ers signed former Tenneesee Titans defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu to the practice squad’s other open spot, which was created with them placing safety Tayler Hawkins (wrist) on Injured Reserve with Verrett.

That defensive line will not be getting back Drake Jackson, who posted a social-media video of his left-knee surgery, a day after coach Kyle Shanahan said Jackson was not an option to come off Injured Reserve. All three of Jackson’s sacks came in the season opener, which started his second season.
