An under-the-radar, one-for-one trade sees a couple of players change organizations.

On Thursday night, the Calgary Flames announced that they had acquired forward Riley Damiani from the Dallas Stars for forward Emilio Pettersen.

Both players are currently on one-year, two-way contracts with cap hits of $775,000, even though both players have spent most of the last four seasons in the American Hockey League.

Damiani played seven games with the Stars during the 2021-22 season, scoring a goal and an assist. That is the extent of his NHL tenure.

The Mississauga native has scored 10 goals and 13 assists in 53 games with the AHL’s Texas Stars this season. He has spent all four seasons of his pro career with the Stars, scoring 47 goals and 79 assists in 204 career games, notching three points in eight playoff games.

The former Kitchener Ranger was the AHL Rookie of the Year, earning All-Star Team honors during the 2020-21 season, which saw him score 11 goals and 25 assists.

Pettersen has never made it to the NHL, despite having spent the last four seasons with the Flames’ primary affiliate, dating back to its days in Stockton. Through 54 games with the Wranglers this year, the Norwegian-born forward has notched seven goals and 23 assists. In 203 AHL games, the 23-year-old has registered 45 goals and 69 assists, including five more points in 16 playoff games.

This was not the first time the Stars and Flames have worked out a deal together this trade deadline season. On Feb. 28, Dallas acquired defenseman Chris Tanev from Calgary, in which the Flames received two picks from the Stars and defensive prospect Artem Grushnikov.

The Dallas Stars (38-17-9) are currently atop the Central Division, two points ahead of the Winnipeg Jets and Colorado Avalanche.

The Flames (30-26-5) are sixth in the Metropolitan Division, eight points out of a Wild Card spot.
