Spurs Reportedly Linked To Former All-Star Point Guard
As a result of getting the top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs were able to bring in a generational talent in the form of French phenom Victor Wembanyama to follow in the footsteps of other great big men that Gregg Popovich has coached in David Robinson and Tim Duncan.
Although Wembanyama proved to be as advertised in his first season as he went on to win NBA Rookie of the Year and was a finalist for NBA Defensive Player of the Year, the Spurs didn’t have any success during the 2023-24 regular season, with the storied franchise finishing with a disappointing record of 22-60, which was one of the worst records in the league.
Fortunately for San Antonio, the team is armed with two top draft choices in the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft, with the Spurs drafting at No. 4 and No. 8, which they could use to make a significant trade during the offseason.
With the team sorely lacking at the point guard position, it appears the Spurs are quite interested in trading for Darius Garland of the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to Sam Amico via NBACentral.
Along with the two high draft picks in the first round, the Spurs also have two second-round picks this year, which could also be used in a blockbuster trade to acquire Garland or another player of interest this summer.
With the Cavaliers more than likely offering superstar guard Donovan Mitchell a lucrative long-term contract extension this summer, Garland could be viewed as expendable and sent packing in a trade, which means this trade scenario with the Spurs is very possible.
