Everton are facing late PL battle to sign £18m ‘goalscoring king’ before 11pm deadline

Although January has been a largely silent month for Everton, there is a suggestion that something could well happen this Deadline Day to shock fans.

After all, stranger things have happened at this football club, which never really seems to do what you would expect of it.

That being said, they have arguably never been as hamstrung as they are today, mid-way through an appeal for November’s ten-point deduction and knowing that another legal battle awaits immediately after.

But they need reinforcements badly, and with Nottingham Forest clearly ignoring the potential sanction, perhaps Sean Dyche could now follow suit.

Who could Everton sign on Deadline Day?

With many rumours tenuous and largely unrealistic, it is hard on a day like today to cut through to potential deals to those that have a genuine chance of happening.

And with Everton needing offensive additions at a cut price, the reported availability of Chuba Akpom could come at an opportune moment for both player and club.

That is at least what is being noted by journalist Ryan Taylor, who suggests that the Toffees are one of numerous Premier League clubs vying to capture the former Arsenal marksman before today’s 11 pm deadline.

He writes: ‘Everton, Luton & Crystal Palace considering late moves for Chuba Akpom. Sources say loan proposals are likelier than permanent bids. Lille have already seen one bid rejected by Ajax earlier in window. Interest from Bundesliga also.’

The 28-year-old joined Ajax just last summer for a £12m fee, but could be moved on amid all the turmoil swirling around Amsterdam.

Would Chuba Akpom be a good fit for Sean Dyche?

Well, with the ability to drop deep and link play or act as a lone poacher, his versatility would certainly lend an almighty helping hand to Dyche’s front line.

Especially given how desperately profligate they have been in recent weeks, having scored just four in their last eight games across all competitions.
