Newcastle United now want to sign Marc Guehi after unexpected twist – sources

Newcastle United are plotting a summer swoop for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi after their unexpected injury crisis, sources have told Football Insider.

Sven Botman underwent anterior cruciate ligament surgery last month – before Jamaal Lascelles suffered an identical injury in Saturday’s (30 March) clash with West Ham.

The double blow leaves Newcastle down to the barebones at the back and they are now planning to sign defensive reinforcements in the summer window.

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (3 April) that Eddie Howe and his recruitment staff are planning to sign two central defenders in the upcoming transfer window.

Newcastle plot Guehi deal despite big-money Crystal Palace demands

Guehi is a top target for the Magpies after his impressive displays for Crystal Palace since joining from Chelsea in 2021.

It is believed Palace will demand a huge fee to consider parting with the England international – but Newcastle are plotting a revamp of their defence and could sanction a big-money deal.

Nine-cap star Guehi has made 26 appearances across all competitions in the 2023-24 campaign, starting in 24 of those outings.

He suffered a knee injury in February which could sideline him until the end of April – but is set to be back fit for the European Championships in Germany this summer.

His contract at Crystal Palace, which hasn’t been renewed since he joined the club, is set to expire in June 2026.

Guehi is five games short of reaching the milestone of 100 Premier League appearances during his time with the Eagles.
