Exeter City need more consistency to keep good runs from turning bad
“We have to go on better runs and keep performing at a level so when we win again, do so consistently and over a longer period of time”
Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell has urged his Grecians players to be more consistent and to stop their back-to-back defeats from becoming anything worse. After a 3-0 defeat at home to Derby County on Tuesday night, City suffered a 1-0 loss at Lincoln City on Saturday for what was a 17 th league reverse of the campaign.
The Grecians haven’t gone four games unbeaten in the league all season – with three separate streaks of three games unbeaten the best they have achieved. Indeed, since Caldwell took charge 18 months ago, four games in the league is the longest unbeaten run the side have put together.
Not since the League Two promotion campaign have they put together a longer run, with City knowing all too well from this season as to how a bad run can quickly spiral. The 13-game run between September and Boxing Day, which was the worst in 28 years, is an example of what can happen when things go wrong – although there is no suggestion yet of a repeat run.

The defeat saw them drop to 14 th in the League One table. While the gap to the bottom four is still seven points, everyone below Exeter has at least one game in hand. Five teams have two or three, while Port Vale in 22 nd have four. The Grecians will hope to get back to winning ways next weekend when Fleetwood Town, who sit 23 rd , visit St James Park, and to start another unbeaten run.
