NFL Insider Reports Steelers Likely Unwilling To Pick Up Justin Fields Fifth Year $25 Million Option
Nine-time Pro Bowler Russell Wilson will battle it out with 25-year-old third year quarterback Justin Fields for starting position with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Both players are trying to prove themselves after being pushed out by their previous clubs. Wilson will likely be the starter in 2024, but Fields is coming off a stellar year with the Chicago Bears and could play a major role.
Fields is entering the final year of his rookie contract and the Steelers have a $25 million option for a fifth year. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, however, the organization will most likely pass on that option.
“League sources do not expect the Steelers to pick up the $25 million fifth-year option on quarterback Justin Fields, whom the team acquired last month for a conditional 2025 6th-round pick. Fields and Russell Wilson both now will be entering the last year of their contracts,” said Schefter
Last season, Fields finished with 2562 passing yards, 16 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He is yet to make a playoff appearance after three seasons in the NFL.
It is important to note the Steelers also hold seven picks in the upcoming draft including the no. 20, 51 and 84 in the first three rounds. While selecting a quarterback in the firts round seems highly unlikely, Pittsburgh cold attempt to bring in a long-term solution from this talented quarterback class.
