Luke Young was relieved of his duties at Wrexham this summer, with the former skipper now dropping an ‘unbelievable’ claim about the dressing room.

Luke Young was an incredible servant to Wrexham.

The 31-year-old amassed over 250 appearances for the Reds across a six-year stint and left the club on good terms this summer.

Young made history by captaining the side to consecutive promotions but Phil Parkinson couldn’t offer him the guarantee of regular football in League One.

So, once his contract expired this summer, Parkinson decided to let him go and the Englishman felt this was the correct decision, claiming it made him have ‘even more’ respect for the manager.

The tough-tackling midfielder will be remembered fondly by Wrexham supporters while there’s one thing in particular that he holds in high regard.

The dressing room at Wrexham has been just as important to the success off the pitch as on it.

Elliot Lee has previously said it’s the best he’s been a part of and Young echoes a similar sentiment, claiming the current dressing room is the best he’s played with.

He praised the work of Parkinson, who built a squad that was ultimately brimming with quality on the field but personality off it.

Speaking on the Rob Ryan Red podcast, Young said: “He picks out players and characters he wants to bring in. I give the gaffer his due, he brought in very very good players but also very very good characters and I think that’s very hard to do.

“He could have easily gone out and probably almost got who he wants and to an extent, he did. But it wasn’t just willy nilly, ‘oh I’ve got a bit of money, I can just get him, him, him and him’.

“There was a reason behind it, and I’ve said a lot of times in many interviews, it’s up there with the best, if not, the best dressing room that I’ve been involved in over the last year, two three years, the way they’ve just built it. The togetherness we had off the pitch was unbelievable.”

Wrexham dressing room can inspire even more success

The key reason why Wrexham take a while to recruit players is that they assess the individual as a person alongside the qualities they bring onto the pitch.

For instance, Parkinson left it till deadline day last year to bring in George Evans and Arthur Okonkwo on loan from Arsenal.

Taking their time and being meticulous with recruitment has ultimately carved their way to success and for as long as Parkinson is at the helm, he’ll ensure what the players bring as people is equal to how they perform on the field.

It’s the main reason they’ve been so successful in recent years; when they go through a rough patch, they have the correct personnel and experience in the dressing room to pick themselves up.

The togetherness and camaraderie between the players is there for all to see and as long as the group of players isn’t broken up, the Reds can continue to flourish.
